Pilot 1

Civil engineering scenario, United Kingdom

The Pilot 1 is a civil engineering scenario that will be built in the dualling of a section of the A465 – Section 5 & 6 from Dowlais Top to Hirwaun in Wales (United Kingdom).

The civil engineering scenario will include a new construction structure, with 6 grade-separated interchanges, 29 bridges, 18 retaining walls and 3 footbridges. The construction is promoted by the Welsh Government jointly with Future Valleys Project Co (FCC Construcción UK branch) and designed by Atkins.

DigiChecks will use one of the different sections that include highways, structures, pavements, drainage, and furniture to validate its developments. All stakeholders will validate the usability of the DigiChecks Framework in permits and compliance checks. The use of Digital tools in this pilot is linked to BIM (for design, coordination, planning, cost control, and asset information), GIS (environmental and restricted services) and LiDAR (survey). All this information will be processed in a Common Data Environment to be distributed along the different stakeholders in the project.

The processes involved in this pilot are:

  • Preliminary procedures: construction permit (permitting authority), contact with the different Public Administrations that are involved in the work area, verification of the onsite setting-out, other authorizations and approvals, the opening of the “Work Centre”, and readiness for construction document signature.
  • Construction process: use of public thoroughfares, waste management, monthly certifications and checks, legalization of installations, final Certificate of Work, final reception of work.
  • Post-contraction: Validation/Legalization, certificate of the finished.
